Which CONSPIT Wheel Base Should You Choose?
CONSPIT’s ARES range gives you three direct drive wheel bases to choose from: the ARES APEX 8Nm, ARES 12Nm and ARES Platinum 20Nm. The right choice comes down to the level of torque and force-feedback headroom you want rather than simply choosing the highest number. More torque doesn’t automatically mean better force feedback or faster lap times — it provides a stronger and wider range of forces to work with.
CONSPIT ARES APEX 8Nm is the entry point into the range, delivering a substantial step up from gear or belt-driven systems while remaining manageable for drivers moving into direct drive for the first time. It also has a compatible desk clamp, making it a practical option if you’re not using a full sim racing cockpit. The ARES APEX is available with CONSPIT’s CDR quick-release system.
CONSPIT ARES 12Nm is the natural middle-ground choice, giving enthusiast racers additional torque headroom over the APEX. This allows you to run stronger force-feedback settings while retaining more headroom rather than operating the wheel base continually near its maximum output. The ARES 12Nm is available with either the CDR or CDP quick-release system, giving you a choice depending on your existing hardware and preferred setup.
CONSPIT ARES Platinum 20Nm sits at the top of the range for experienced racers who want significantly greater steering force and torque headroom. Because of the forces involved, it should be installed on a suitably rigid sim racing cockpit rather than a desk clamp or lighter mounting setup. Like the ARES 12Nm, the Platinum is available with either the CDR or CDP quick-release system.
Building a CONSPIT Sim Racing Ecosystem
A CONSPIT wheel base can form the centre of a wider CONSPIT sim racing setup, with compatible steering wheels, pedals and other hardware available within the same ecosystem.
The choice between CDR and CDP quick-release systems on the ARES 12Nm and ARES Platinum provides additional flexibility when configuring or expanding your setup. CONSPIT bundles can also provide a convenient way to combine compatible wheel base, steering wheel and other hardware if you’re building a new simulator.
For mounting, CONSPIT offers dedicated brackets, front-mounting hardware and wheel base extension options, alongside the ARES APEX desk clamp for suitable installations. As torque increases, cockpit rigidity becomes increasingly important. For the ARES Platinum 20Nm in particular, a strong, low-flex cockpit will allow the wheel base to deliver its force feedback without unnecessary movement or flex in the simulator.

FAQs
Which CONSPIT wheel base should I buy?
The ARES APEX 8Nm is the natural starting point for drivers entering direct drive, while the ARES 12Nm provides additional torque and headroom for enthusiast sim racers. The ARES Platinum 20Nm is aimed at experienced racers who want a high-torque direct drive system and have a suitably rigid cockpit.
Is the CONSPIT ARES APEX 8Nm enough for sim racing?
For many sim racers, yes. An 8Nm direct drive wheel base can provide strong force feedback and is particularly well suited to drivers moving into direct drive for the first time. Drivers wanting stronger steering forces or additional torque headroom can consider the ARES 12Nm or ARES Platinum 20Nm.
Is the CONSPIT ARES 12Nm worth it over the ARES APEX 8Nm?
The ARES 12Nm is worth considering if you want stronger force feedback and additional torque headroom. The ARES APEX remains an attractive option if 8Nm is sufficient for your preferred settings, while the ARES 12Nm provides more room for stronger forces as your sim racing setup develops
Who should choose the CONSPIT ARES Platinum 20Nm?
The ARES Platinum is best suited to experienced sim racers who deliberately want a high-torque wheel base and have a rigid cockpit capable of handling the additional forces. Its 20Nm output also provides substantial torque headroom without requiring the wheel base to be operated at maximum strength.
What's the difference between CONSPIT's CDR and CDP quick releases?
CONSPIT offers CDR and CDP quick-release options for connecting compatible steering wheels to its ARES wheel bases. The ARES APEX is available with the CDR system, while the ARES 12Nm and ARES Platinum are available in both CDR and CDP versions. Choose the version that matches the steering wheel and CONSPIT hardware you intend to use, particularly if you already own equipment within one of the two systems.
What comes in the box with a CONSPIT ARES wheel base?
CONSPIT ARES wheel bases are supplied with the wheel base, power supply, power cable and mounting bolts. The quick-release system depends on the ARES model and version selected, so check the individual product listing to make sure you choose the correct CDR or CDP option for your steering wheel and setup.
Can I use a non-CONSPIT steering wheel with an ARES wheel base?
Yes. Third-party steering wheels can be used with a CONSPIT ARES wheel base when the appropriate quick-release and connection method are used.
CONSPIT wheel bases can also support USB passthrough when used with the CONSPIT USB-A Adapter Spacer. This provides a convenient connection option for compatible USB steering wheels and can avoid the need to run a separate USB cable directly from the steering wheel to the PC.
Check the quick-release and USB requirements of your specific steering wheel before ordering, or contact SimRacer UK if you need help confirming compatibility.
Can the CONSPIT ARES APEX be mounted to a desk?
Yes. CONSPIT offers a dedicated desk clamp for the ARES APEX, providing a mounting option for suitable desks and setups where a full sim racing cockpit isn’t being used.
Do I need a cockpit for a CONSPIT wheel base?
Not necessarily for every setup. The ARES APEX has a compatible desk-mounting option, but a rigid cockpit becomes increasingly desirable as torque increases. For the ARES Platinum 20Nm in particular, we recommend a suitably strong sim racing cockpit.
