Qubic System QS-BT1 Seat Belt Tensioner

The Qubic System QS-BT1 Seat Belt Tensioner is a dual-channel direct drive harness tensioning system designed to add physical braking, cornering and vehicle feedback to a racing simulator.

With up to 200N of force per channel, the QS-BT1 independently controls the left and right sides of your racing harness using simulator telemetry. This allows you to physically feel braking loads, lateral acceleration, high-speed cornering, wheel lock, traction loss and other vehicle behaviour through your body.

The QS-BT1 can operate as a standalone sim racing belt tensioner or integrate with a compatible Qubic System motion platform, making it suitable for everything from high-end home simulators to professional motion systems.

SimRacer UK is an authorised Qubic System distributor in the UK, providing specialist advice, UK-based support and complete motion simulator design and installation services.

Dual-Channel Direct Drive Belt Tensioner

The QS-BT1 uses two independently controlled direct drive channels, with each channel capable of generating up to 200N / 20.5kg / 45lb of peak pulling force.

Combined, the two channels can generate up to 400N, but their independent operation is particularly important because the system can provide asymmetrical feedback rather than simply pulling both shoulder belts equally.

This allows the QS-BT1 to communicate different vehicle forces through the harness depending on what the simulated car is doing.

Feel Braking Forces Through the Harness

Braking is one of the areas where an active belt tensioner can make a significant difference to simulator immersion.

As the simulated car decelerates, the QS-BT1 can increase tension through the racing harness, creating a physical sensation of the driver being loaded against the belts.

Instead of relying entirely on the display, pedals and steering wheel to communicate deceleration, you receive an additional physical cue through your upper body.

For performance-focused sim racing, this provides another way to interpret braking load and vehicle behaviour.

Cornering & Lateral Acceleration Feedback

Because the QS-BT1 controls its two channels independently, it can also provide asymmetrical harness feedback during cornering.

This enables the left and right sides of the harness to respond differently to simulator telemetry, helping reproduce sensations associated with lateral acceleration and high-speed cornering.

Qubic specifically lists braking, lateral acceleration, high-speed cornering, wheel lock and traction loss among the primary effects supported by the QS-BT1.

Engine, Road Surface & Gear Shift Effects

The QS-BT1 can do more than apply sustained harness tension.

Its direct drive technology can also generate vibration and transient feedback through the belts.

Depending on the racing title and available telemetry, supported effects can include:

  • Engine vibration
  • Road surface feedback
  • Rumble strips
  • Upshifts
  • Downshifts
  • Wheel lock
  • Traction loss
  • Cornering forces
  • Collision feedback

Qubic documents engine vibration, road-surface effects, gear changes, cornering and collision forces among the feedback that the QS-BT1 can reproduce.

Does the QS-BT1 Need a Motion System?

No. The Qubic System QS-BT1 can operate as a completely standalone device.

You therefore don’t need an existing Qubic motion platform to add active harness feedback to your simulator.

This makes the QS-BT1 particularly interesting for drivers who already have a rigid cockpit, direct drive wheelbase and performance pedals and want to add another form of physical feedback without immediately investing in a complete motion system.

It can also become part of a Qubic motion setup later if you decide to expand your simulator.

Qubic Motion System Integration

Although the QS-BT1 works independently, it is also designed to integrate with the wider Qubic System motion range.

When incorporated into a motion simulator, the belt tensioner provides an additional physical feedback channel alongside movement of the cockpit or seat.

A high-end simulator can therefore use:

Direct drive wheelbase – steering and tyre forces through your hands

Performance pedals – braking and throttle feedback through your feet

Motion system – vehicle movement through the cockpit and seat

QS-BT1 – telemetry-driven harness forces through your upper body

Rather than relying on one system to communicate every aspect of vehicle behaviour, these different feedback systems can complement each other.

QS-BT1 with Qubic System Motion Platforms

The QS-BT1 is designed to work alongside compatible Qubic System motion hardware, including platforms such as the QS-210, QS-220, QS-V20, QS-S25 and QS-S35, with software compatibility depending on the overall system configuration.

When the QS-BT1 is used on a motion simulator, Qubic specifies that the tensioner must be mounted to the part of the simulator that moves with the seat.

SimRacer UK can advise on the appropriate configuration when incorporating the QS-BT1 into a complete Qubic System simulator.

Aluminium Profile Cockpit Compatibility

The QS-BT1 can be installed on suitable aluminium profile sim racing cockpits using its universal mounting adapters.

Because each channel can generate up to 200N of force, the cockpit and mounting points must be sufficiently strong to withstand the forces produced by the tensioner.

This makes correct installation important, particularly when combining the QS-BT1 with a motion platform.

If you are unsure whether the QS-BT1 can be fitted to your existing cockpit, SimRacer UK can advise on installation and compatibility before purchase.

What Racing Harness Does the QS-BT1 Require?

A racing harness is required but is not included with the QS-BT1.

The QS-BT1 belt buckles support both 2-inch and 3-inch racing harnesses.

Qubic recommends using an adjustable 5-point or 6-point racing harness, preferably FIA certified.

Importantly, the QS-BT1 should operate as the belt tensioner rather than the primary harness attachment point. Qubic recommends attaching the harness securely to the cockpit before connecting the tensioner buckles to the harness.

QS-BT1 vs a Full Motion System

A belt tensioner and a motion platform provide different types of physical feedback.

The QS-BT1 acts directly through the racing harness, making braking and other vehicle loads physically noticeable through the driver’s upper body.

A motion system moves the seat or complete simulator to reproduce acceleration cues, chassis movement, pitch, roll and other vehicle behaviour depending on the type of motion system.

The QS-BT1 therefore doesn’t have to be viewed as an alternative to motion.

It can be used:

  • As a standalone physical feedback upgrade
  • Before adding a motion system
  • Alongside an existing Qubic motion platform
  • As part of a complete high-end motion simulator

For drivers who primarily want stronger braking and harness-based G-force cues, the QS-BT1 provides a way to introduce active physical feedback without immediately installing a complete motion platform.

QS-BT1 vs a Seat Mover

A seat mover and belt tensioner also provide different sensations.

A seat mover such as the Qubic System QS-H13 physically moves the driver’s seat to generate longitudinal and lateral motion cues.

The QS-BT1 leaves the seat itself stationary when used on a static cockpit and instead varies the force applied through the racing harness.

Drivers looking for the most complete physical feedback can use the technologies together rather than necessarily choosing one or the other.

Is a Belt Tensioner Worth It for Sim Racing?

For a conventional static simulator, most feedback reaches the driver through the steering wheel, pedals, display and audio.

A belt tensioner adds another physical feedback channel.

The QS-BT1 is particularly relevant if you want to feel braking and vehicle loads through your body rather than relying exclusively on visual and steering feedback.

For drivers who already have a quality direct drive wheelbase, performance pedals and rigid cockpit, a belt tensioner can therefore represent a significant next step in simulator immersion.

The ability to operate independently also means you can add the QS-BT1 before deciding whether to invest in a complete motion system.

  • High-end home sim racing setups
  • Drivers wanting physical braking feedback
  • Static simulators without motion
  • Existing Qubic System motion simulators
  • Professional and commercial simulators
  • Driver training simulators

FAQs

The QS-BT1 is designed for sim racers and professional simulator users who want physical harness feedback in addition to the feedback provided by their steering wheel, pedals and display.

It is particularly attractive for drivers who already have a high-quality static simulator and want to add physical braking and cornering cues without immediately installing a complete motion platform.

The QS-BT1 is an active dual-channel seat belt tensioner that changes racing harness tension according to simulator telemetry.

It can reproduce physical cues associated with braking, lateral acceleration, high-speed cornering, gear changes, wheel lock, traction loss, engine vibration, road surfaces and collisions, depending on game support.

The QS-BT1 generates up to 200N / 20.5kg / 45lb of peak pulling force per channel, with two independently controlled channels.

This provides a combined maximum of 400N while still allowing the two sides of the harness to produce different effects.

No. The QS-BT1 can operate as a standalone independent device, so you do not need a motion platform to use it.

It can also be integrated into a compatible Qubic System motion setup later.

Potentially, yes, because the two systems provide different types of physical feedback.

A motion platform moves the simulator or seat, whereas the QS-BT1 applies forces directly through the racing harness. Combining them can therefore provide additional braking and body-load cues rather than simply duplicating the same feedback.

The QS-BT1 supports 2-inch and 3-inch harnesses.

Qubic recommends an adjustable 5 or 6-point racing harness, preferably FIA certified, capable of safely handling the forces generated by the tensioner.

No. A racing harness is not included with the QS-BT1 and must be purchased separately.

This allows you to select a suitable harness for your cockpit and seating configuration.

Yes. The QS-BT1 includes universal mounting adapters that can be used with suitable aluminium profile cockpits.

The cockpit and mounting points must be sufficiently strong to withstand the maximum 200N force generated on each belt.

Yes. Because the QS-BT1 works independently, it can be installed on a suitable static simulator first.

If you later upgrade to a compatible Qubic motion system, the QS-BT1 can then become part of the wider motion setup.

No. Qubic specifies the QS-BT1 for both vehicle and flight simulation.

Its independent 200N channels can also provide harness loading for supported flight simulation effects and high-G manoeuvres.
